Rack is made from recycled; forklift pallet, aluminium chairs, twin wall polycarbonate. 316 stainless wire (new). Ground below good for spalting.

3m x 160mm o/d aluminium van tube (3″ fall over length to let water out)…

Bosch PTL1; 2kw, 2.4l capacity = 45 mins, 3m hose.

~§~

Hose fitting is 14mm circumference plus the bayonet (push fit only as added saftey).

Machined brass fitting from propane bottle valve (3/4 bspt, 14mm bore).

End cap is left loose (hinged at top) to allow steam egress.

Brackets were made made from old aluminium cafe chairs left on the street

Head knives

Head knives for cutting & skiving leatherwork.

Made from spalted silver birch, brass & medium carbon steel alloy, mirror polished with beeswax finish.

~§~

Donor steel from old saw blade (old non tct blade). Took 2 teeth off to see if the metal could be hardened.

~§~

Heated both teeth to cherry for 3 min, quenched one & left other to cool.

~§~

My quenching bucket. Spark tests (grinding) on the 2 teeth gave good results.

Cleaned up both sides with abrasives (flap wheels, silicon carbide discs, etc.).

~§~

Stuck my templates to the blade…

Cut them out with angle grinder.

~§~

Centre marked a sharpening pivot point…

Drilled that mark…

~§~

Took off paper & made a sharpening jig for the belt sander.

That’s how this is going to go…

Sharpened & polished.

~§~

Heated to cherry for 3 mins (12mm = 30mins soak time). Had to keep the torch moving to keep the blade hot over its entire surface.

After quenching the blade but not the tang.

~§~

Re-polished.

Made from ‘belt leather’ & oak with rubber feet for sharpening my leatherwork tools.

Counter-bored recesses in oak base to secure these 6mm Ø x 3mm rubber feet.

Wood carving strop also from ‘belt leather’ with shaped edges. Both are impregnated with aluminium oxide polishing compound.
